Saint Sebastian

by Alli from Mankato

Sebastian was born in Narborne in Gaul. He was educated in Milan. It isn't historically certain, but his life span is thought to be from 257-288. Sebastian was said to have entered the Roman Army so he could assist martyrs without being suspected. When Sebastian entered the army, he was under rule of Maximan. This was around the time 283.

When two men, Marcus and Marcellian, were put under the death sentence Sebastian prayed and told them to keep their faith in God. This being one of the many converts Sebastian made. Others included the master of the rolls, Nicostratus and his wife, and many more. He was declared captain in the praetorian guards by Emperor Diocletian and Maximian.

Sebastian was accused under Diocletian. He condemned him to be shot to death with arrows and left for the dead. A young widow found his body and restored him to health. He then, Reappeared before the Emperor for his injustice to Christians. The Emperor condemned him be beaten to death by clubs.

Sebastian's body was then thrown into a sewer but a pious lady had it privately removed and buried it in the Catacombs. His feast day is January 20th. He is the patron Saint of archers, athletes, and soldiers because of his physical endurance and his passion of spreading and defending faith. He's the patron of soldiers because he was in the Roman Army to defend confessors and martyrs without drawing attention to himself. He is appealed for protection against plagues.

Sebastian is a great example and model for everyone today in that we shouldn't be afraid to stand up for our faith and to never give up our faith. Sebastian suffered and gave his whole life to defend his faith and we should aspire to have that same attitude on life.
