Ty Penningon

by Kelly from Glenbrook Middle School

“Our show proves that some pretty incredible things can happen when people come together.” -Ty Pennington

When ABC decided to make a show called Extreme Makeover Home Edition, where deserving families get their home rebuilt in seven days, they chose Ty Pennington to be the leader of the eight-person team. The show was supposed to be a 13- part special, but it was a huge hit and was turned into a series. This led to an endorsement deal with Sears, a sponsor of the show.

Ty Pennington is known to have fought through a lot to keep doing his job, like pulled muscles, heatstroke, or food poisoning. Once, when working on a house in his hometown of Atlanta, he had to have an appendectomy and taped an episode while in the hospital. Ty once said “I don’t want to let the family down and all of us with the show want to give them the new house they deserve”.

Today, Pennington and his team are going into their seventh season. Ty works about 240-260 days a year. He declares it “the greatest job in the world”.

To me a hero is someone who helps people live a better life and doesn’t ask for much in return. Ty Pennington is my hero because he helps families who help others. He does this by giving the families a new home and new things. When I grow up, I want to be just like Ty Pennington and help build homes for people who deserve it.
