Winston Churchill

by Tate from Toronto

Sir Winston Churchill is the greatest war leader of the 20th century. He was the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1940-1945. This covered almost all of World War 2. He was considered a great wartime leader, but not a peace time leader.

Churchill's early life was similar to the stereotypical aristocratic childhood. His parents were never around as he was growing up, and as a consequence he grew very close to his nanny, Elizabeth Anne Everest. His relationship with his father was ice cold and distant. As a boy, Churchill got into a few fights, including an incident which ended with him being stabbed and almost dying. He was a daring and outspoken person. He was one of the first politicians to speak out about the threat that Nazi Germany was posing. He had a long standing career in the army and spent time stationed in Cuba, India, Sudan and South Africa.

Winston Churchill, was not only a hero for the British people, but also a hero for the entire world. In the darkest days of World War 2, when Britain alone stood unconquered, Winston Churchill was there to provide the support and spirit for the Allied offensive into Nazi territory. His famous speeches inspired an entire population. His speech on August 20th 1940 contains one of the most famous quotes of World War 2, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". He was talking about the raging Battle of Britain occurring at that moment. The Luftwaffe were launching attacks of key targets in Britain in an effort to overpower the RAF (Royal Air force) and launch an invasion by sea. The efforts of the RAF in successfully defending Britain was the reason Hitler cancelled his invasion. It was considered the first major defeat of Nazi Germany since the war started. It was the turning point of the War.

The greatest war hero of modern times was Sir Winston Churchill. His powerful speeches and brave attitude inspired a generation and continue to motivate children of today, that even in your darkest moments, surrounded by the enemy, you can still succeed. Winston Churchill, the greatest hero of World War 2.
