You may think of heroes as policemen, firemen, and doctors, even Superman. All of these people are heroes, but what about the forgotten heroes, the people that help us in our times of need? The people who perform these kind deeds every day give us hope for the future of the world. I try to be like my heroes and remember how kind they were to me.

When I was about seven years old, my family and I took a trip to Oahu, Hawaii. It was beautiful there, and we decided to go site seeing. We went to hike Oahu’s famous volcano, Diamond Head. It was very high up and it took forever to get to the top, but once we reached our destination, we realized the long journey was worth it.

Since I was young at the time, I became very restless, very easily, so my brother, David and I started to walk down because our parents were being slow. David started to go a little faster and increased to a jog. At that age I wanted to do everything the same as him, or I would compete with him to see who’s better, or in this case, who’s faster. I decided to jog too, even though my parents told me not to. I was not known for my obedience.

I think you know where this is leading. Yes, I ended up tripping and cutting both knees and hands. Sadly, I knew no one around me because David had always been far ahead of me and didn’t know I tripped, and my parents were far behind me. Once my parents and David heard me crying, they hurried to me as quickly as they could. My parents had no band-aids and didn’t know what to do. There were people who walked passed me with just a sad face, but there was an old, kind Asian couple who offered more than just a sad face, and gave me band-aids.

This may be considered the smallest act of kindness, but my family and I were so glad. Too bad they spoke a different language because we never really got a chance to thank them. I still have a scar on my knee from the accident and a T-shirt that says, ‘I Survived’. Whenever I see it, I laugh to myself and say, ‘barely’. The T-shirt actually still fits, and every time I wear it, I am reminded of my angels.
