CALL FOR ENTRIES  - THE 2021 RON KOVIC PEACE PRIZE – DEADLINE October 1

July 12, 2021 - LAGUNA BEACH, CA - The MY HERO International Film Festival is accepting submissions for the Ron Kovic Peace Prize, an annual award that honors a short film that addresses the theme of peace. The final deadline is October 1, 2021.

Ron Kovic has been an accomplished author, artist, and peace activist for more than 45 years. Once a Marine Corps sergeant, Kovic served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War before being wounded in combat and paralyzed from the mid-chest down. His memoir Born on the Fourth of July became a national bestseller and was made into a feature film.

After the war, Kovic became a prominent spokesperson for the anti-war movement, addressing the Democratic National Convention in 1976. He spoke before President Obama and other dignitaries at the 32nd annual Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony in 2009. Kovic personally offers the $1,000 cash prize as part of the MY HERO International Film Festival to support artists and peace activists whose work shows the power of non-violent solutions.

Submissions should be no longer than 10 minutes in length and appropriate for all ages. There are categories for filmmakers of all ages and abilities —  from elementary school students to professionals. Entries may include NarrativeDocumentary Music VideoExperimental and Animation genres, as well as Excerpts and PSAs.

The MY HERO International Film Festival is part of The MY HERO Project, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to sharing stories of heroes from all parts of the world. MY HERO's award-winning website (myhero.com) hosts the world's largest archive of hero-themed stories, music, art and short films.

Last year, two films took the top honor: The Curious Scroll: How Does Something Ugly Become Beautiful, by Andrew Purchin, which brings together strangers with differing political views to make art, and The Peace of Wild Things, by Katy Wang, Charlotte Ager and David Kamp, a film that illustrates a poem written and narrated by Wendell Berry.
