Third Class Carriage, 1862-64
by Honore Daumier
Painting
Daumier was interested in depicting the impact of industrialization on modern urban life in Paris in the mid 19th century. His attempts to illustrate the real workers and the underbelly of society humanize the city’s progress and urbanization. It is not an explicit portraiture of heroism but questions who the real heroes of the city were.
