Heart of a hero

by Caleb Levesque from Charlotte, NC

The other day I had a sore in my mouth, a canker sore. So grievous my mom got her dentist involved to help get me some medicine. My parents demonstrated persistence and compassion towards me through this whole experience. Once it mended, they had “saved the day,” becoming an illustration of a hero (in my eyes). What a hero isn't, in my eyes, is someone who isn't willing to try something new, to make a change, or really just not having a heart to serve. This is why, I believe, a hero must produce qualities of a servant's heart, fortitude, and perseverance.

There are many cases when a hero shows a servant’s heart. An example of this  trait being presented is Jesus Christ. He is probably the best example of caring for others because of his sacrifices and miracles. He healed the unhealable and loved the unloved. He also made the ultimate sacrifice by being slain on the cross for our sins, our faults. This took so much courage to die for us that he ended up sweating blood due to his insane amount of stress. Also, notable of this is George Washington. The first president of the United States served his country with humility and honesty. Washington was a military leader in the Revolutionary War and led his men, and our country, to freedom. He also helped create the rules of the presidency with there being terms (which show how long a president is in office). Each term being four years. Not to mention that he laid down the foundation of our country, constructing it and solidifying it, like a parent raising their child to be successful. In addition, Mr. Schultz - a teacher at my school - is a servant to God and to others. He willingly offers to pray over us: for disease, for protection, and for our daily lives. I have also seen him open doors for kids at carpool. This is a welcoming action that can be respected. I can't imagine how a hero can be a hero without caring and serving for others.

In order for a hero to be acknowledged, a hero needs to have fortitude to be an efficient hero. Firstly, David, the young shepherd boy, had great determination in order to fight Goliath. The heated, enraged giant waged war against the Israelites. He challenged someone to combat with him but no one volunteered. Abruptly, David came in and challenged the giant. Being so small, everyone though he was insane but, extraordinarily, he took down the giant having Goliath's fellow soldiers flee as Goliath slowly fell to the musculent, disheveled clay of the earth. Another example is Esther (a Jewish woman). She was married to the king when he finalized a decree that appointed soldiers to kill all Jews. God came to Esther and told her to stop the king from doing so. When she asked the king, I could feel her being very anxious.  If the king says yes, she survives; if no, she withers away like the leaves in winter. She lived because the king said, in a miracle, yes. These actions that they performed show that they are very firm in their state of mind.

A final trait that is required (in my opinion) to be a hero is to have perseverance. A case when this happened was with Walt Disney. He showed perseverance by not giving up on his work. Many rejected him for his lack of creativity. Instead he continued to improve his work, rather than giving up on his hopes/dreams. Because of this, he seemed to have changed shows and movies forever. He laid down the inspiration. All of a sudden a lot of cartoons and cartoon-like movies grew in popularity. Furthermore, Martin Luther King Jr showed a ton of persistence. He supported the Civil Rights Movement, for African Americans to gain their rights. Dr King supported this cause for years. He continued to do this until he was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. Even though he was killed, his legacy still lives 5 decades later. This shows how King was remembered for not giving up. The disciples were also a good example of persistence. They remained in Christ even though their lives were constantly threatened. They also came from insignificant backgrounds. Take Matthew for example: he was a tax collector which was a hated job by others because they were seen to take money for themselves. But, he persisted through the hate. A hero must have persistence in order to be adequate as a hero.

This is why, I believe, a hero must produce qualities of a servant's heart, fortitude, and perseverance. The servant’s heart is for a hero to help others; fortitude is being strong in mentally troubling situations; perseverance causes a hero to never give up. Writing this essay helped me learn about everyday people who are brave enough to make a change. A hero is normally seen as someone with superpowers, but sometimes the power a hero needs is in their heart. Sometimes Superman isn’t the only hero we see in our ordinary, average lives.
