The Adoration of the Shepherds
by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) 1540/41-1614
Painting
Like many artists of his time, El Greco found his heroes in the stories of the Bible and painted them, and often, painted them again. The Adoration of the Shepherds is a version of an original that El Greco had been commissioned to paint for Juan de Ribera, archbishop of Valencia. This one is widely considered to be the superior version. Painted in El Greco's later years, this piece is an excellent example of the artist's growing "tendency towards abstraction and almost dance-like, restless movement, with the gestures of the shepherds indicating their excitement and wonder at the birth of Jesus." - Metropolitan Museum of Art
