by MY HERO Staff from United States

"The energy and spirit that go into my work result in a unique expression of respect and reverence for women, the Earth, and indigenous way of life."

Marsha Gomez was born December 24, 1951, and died in 1998. She was of Choctaw heritage, and used the pottery traditions of "indigenous women in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico."

She founded Alma de Mujer Center for Social Change in Texas in 1998. She also co-founded the Indigenous Women's Network, and was a peace activist. Her most famous work is "Madre del mundo" (Mother of the World) series. The first of these sculptures was created for a protest against a nuclear site in Nevada.
