Ben Carson

by Michael from Chicago

If you Imagine it, you will Dream it, Dream it and you will Become it.

Hello. The meaning of a hero is a person trying to make a difference in the world. I'm here to talk about an African American person. His name is Ben Carson. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised by his mother, along with his older brother Curtis Carson. His parents were divorced when Ben was 4 years old. He came from a poor family. Then he became one of the world's best brain surgeons. In this essay I'm going to talk about different experience Ben had that helped me understand what a hero is like.

When Ben was little along with his older brother Curtis, they both were bad in school. They weren't getting good grades. So one day the mother walked in the apartment and saw Curtis and Ben watching T.V. She turned off the T.V. and demanded them to go to the library, pick two chapter books and give a report by the end of the week. Soon after every book he read, he started to show interest in learning. That is amazing.

Another time is when Ben was in Harvard University. His math teacher gave his class the hardest test. The material on the test was harder than they experienced. One by one, people started to leave. Ben was puzzled because he knew they weren't done. They couldn't do the problems. The problems were too hard. So Ben didn't want to leave. He was trying so hard to complete the test. He lasted until the teacher said "times up." When Ben looked up, he was the only one in the classroom. He was shocked because they had given up. So the teacher looked at him and said, you get an A for this test. The teacher said, "This test is to determine if you give up or you keep trying until you get it. You're one of the people who never gives up." I can learn from this experience as Ben had. Even if you face the hardest obstacle in your life, never give up until you have accomplished it for yourselves.

The time when Ben was training for being a Brain Surgeon. A guy was rushed to the emergency room. He was shot in the head. Ben was running to the office, to see if the two doctors were there. But they couldn't get a hold of either doctor. Ben decided to do the surgery. The only problem is, is that if he does the surgery without a full degree of being a brain surgeon, he could get fired for becoming a brain surgeon. But that didn't stop him from trying to save a life. After the surgery was done, he had saved a person's life. But now, he was going to have to put up with his boss. The next day, his boss congratulated him because of saving a person's life. Granted he could have gotten fired. That tells me he didn't care on getting fired, he cared about saving a life. I think he would rather risk his job for saving another person. That is a true doctor.

All of the experiences that Ben had make me think. It makes me think that no matter who you are, if you truly want it and give it your all, you will succeed. I can learn a lot from Ben. The main reason why Ben is my hero is that he helped me realize if we all come together to help solve our problems, we can all look forward as succeeding. Not just you, but as together. That is the seed of success in ourselves.
