Growing up with a single mother and a brother in Detroit, Michigan was a hard thing to do, just ask Ben Carson. Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18, 1951 in Detroit. When Carson turned 8 years old, his parents divorced. The Carson’s moved to Boston to see if life would be easier, but after a year they went back to Detroit. Ben was never a good student, but when he returned to his Michigan elementary school he realized that he was further behind than the other fifth graders. Ben’s mom decided to take matters into her own hands by turning off the television and only allowing him to watch two programs a week. She also took him and his brother to the library and made them read two books a week. Ben Carson is a man who went through a lot of bad things in his childhood, and he came out as a shining star. Ben Carson became, the first doctor to successfully separate conjoined twins and without his mother he wouldn’t be where he is today. He is a hero because he changed the medical history with his determination and willingness to take risks.

Sonya Carson (Ben’s mother) only had a 3rd grade education. Mrs. Carson pushed Ben to become one of the greatest doctors in history. Ben Carson is known for his two history making surgeries. His first history making surgeries was, successfully separating Siamese twins joined at the head. The other surgery was on a twin suffering from an abnormal expansion of the head.

Ben Carson is a man who is admired and respected throughout the world. “As important is that Carson has become a role model for people of all ages, especially children.” (Carson, Benjamin Solomon (1951- ).” (UXL Newsmakers. Ed. Jennifer Stock. 2nd ed. Detroit: U*X*L, 2005. Student Resource Center – Gold. Gale. MOUNT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL. 25 May. 2010 ) This quote shows us that Ben Carson is a good man because he is admired by all ages. The heroic trait that comes to mind after reading this quote is selflessness. Another reason Ben Carson is respected is because, “Although he works thirteen-hour days and performs hundreds of operations a year, Carson makes time to spread his message, Anything in life is possible, regardless of what color a person is or where they are from.” (Carson, Benjamin Solomon (1951-).” (UXL Newsmakers. Ed. Jennifer Stock. 2nd ed. Detroit: U*X*L, 2005. Student Resource Center – Gold. Gale. MOUNT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL. 25 May. 2010) The heroic trait that comes from this quote is Caring. It shows how much he cares about the youth. After working all day he makes time for youth. Ben Carson is a loving and caring man.

Ben Carson made history with the risks he has taken in the operation room. “In 1987, neurosurgeon Ben Carson successfully performed an operation to separate Siamese twins who were joined at the head. It was a milestone in neurosurgery, but was far from the only noteworthy achievement of Carson’s career.” (Carson, Benjamin Solomon (1951-).”( Encyclopedia of World Biography. Ed. Terrie M. Rooney. Vol. 18. 2nd ed. Detroit: Gale Research, 1998. Student Resource Center – Gold. Gale. MOUNT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL. 25 May. 2010) This quote is significant because it illustrates what great things Carson has achieved. It also demonstrates how hard work will pay off. The heroic trait Bravery is shown when, he attempted a procedure that had been done before, but all other attempts only resulted in death. He successfully split the conjoined twins and they are both alive today. “He also performed a surgery on a twin suffering from an abnormal expansion of the head. Carson was able to relieve the swelling and remove the surplus fluid—all while the unborn twin remained in its mother’s uterus.” (Carson, Benjamin Solomon (1951-).”( Encyclopedia of World Biography. Ed. Terrie M. Rooney. Vol. 18. 2nd ed. Detroit: Gale Research, 1998. Student Resource Center – Gold. Gale. MOUNT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL. 25 May. 2010) Courage is the trait shown here. Due to the courage shown during this operation he once again successfully completed the impossible. As a result of Ben Carson’s hard work and determination he has made a good name for doctors. He has also created a goal for young kids to strive towards.

Ben Carson is a good influence on all who want to become a doctor. “In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Carson is in constant demand as a public speaker.” (1996 - 2010 American Academy of Achievement) Ben Carson doesn’t just help people in the operating room; he also helps people in other ways. His message “Talent-Honesty-Insight-Nice-Knowledge-Books-In-Depth Learning-Go or in other words THINK BIG” (1996 - 2010 American Academy of Achievement), are words he lives by. Ben Carson is still working at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
