Benjamin Soloman Carson

I think of success as reaching beyond ourselves and helping other people in specific ways. Ben Carson said once in his lifetime

Ben Carson made a difference in the medical world. He overcame many obstacles in his life. Ben Carson transformed himself from a poor youngster into one of the most successful neurosurgeons in the world. He read a lot of books to gain more insight and information. He made lives easier with operations he performed. Carson taught people that education is important for the future, and with it, you can realize your goals, only if you believe in yourself. Ben also taught people that you can make a difference in the world. Carson achieved a lot from his past to his future and now is honored for the work he did.


On September 18, 1951, Benjamin Solomon Carson was born in the city of Detroit, Michigan. Ben was the second child; he had an older brother named Curtis. When Ben was eight and Curtis was ten, their parents divorced. Ben navigated through life with racist comments thrown at him and the absence of his father. Ben Carson's childhood wasn’t the best and it wasn’t easy, but he made it through.

Carson had many troubles at school with his education. When he was in middle school, he was known as the class dummy.He changed his attitude and prayed a lot also believed in himself. When Carson went to high school, he was in all honors classes. After high school he was awarded two scholarships to Harvard and Yale, but decided to attend Yale. In Yale, he received a degree in psychology and then went to the University of Michigan to pursue a degree in neurosurgery. Ben came from the bottom of the class to the top of the class in high school and made it to college and he believed in himself all the way.


Carson had many accomplishments in his career. He won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for pushing school age children into greatness and started an organization that offers college scholarships to student across America. He also did an operation that separated a pair of conjoined twins in Germany and was successful. Ben attempted another similar operation in South Africa and it also succeeded. Ben was also part of another team that did another operation of adult women conjoined twins but both women died. In 2002, he discovered he had prostate cancer and underwent surgery and he came out cancer free. Carson had many successes and failures in life, but he kept going.


Ben Carson lived through racial comments to become one of the best neurosurgeons. Carson worked hard in school so he could succeed in life. Ben didn’t have a lot growing up, but he did have family and he thought family was important. He had survived a lot when he was a kid. Carson has inspired kids to work hard in school to succeed in life and to think about your future.
