Blackie The Horse

by William from Tiburon

My hero is Blackie the Horse. Blackie has done many things. He was born in Kansas in 1926. He loved to stand still. A few years later he moved to Salinas, California. His new owner had to feed him carrots, apples, and sugar cubes to get him to go. When he got to Salinas, California, Blackie became a rodeo horse to his owner, a bull roping man who wanted fame and fortune. Because Blackie stood still it was easy for his owner to rope bulls. Then his owner got old and Blackie became a swayed back horse. So he moved to Yosemite and patrolled during spring and in summer. He took photos with tourists with an army captain. But then his back got too old to ride on and Blackie was sold again to an oysterman. His name was Anthony Connel. He lived in Tiburon. A man tried to build a superhighway and mall, but Blackie showed his love for his community, to not make those buildings. Blackie died at 40 years old in 1966. He got a statue made for him as the town's symbol in 1995.

I think Blackie is a hero. He saved the pasture from becoming a shopping mall. Blackie also showed people that standing still is a nice way to notice how beautiful Earth is, and they should go outside right now and do it. Isn't that peaceful? The last is thing is Blackie brought peace to our community and world. That is why Blackie is Will from Tiburon, CA's hero.
