The Dalai Lama is a long line of Buddhist monks from Tibet. Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th Dalai Lama from Tibet. He has very many characteristics that make him a hero.

One example of his heroic characteristics is his bravery. In 1954, Tenzin went to Shanghai to talk to Mao-Tse-Tung and many more people in the Chinese government discussing Tibet’s freedom. He refers to China's policy as "ruthless." In Tibet’s capitol city, Lhasa, Dalai Lama made a demonstration calling on China to leave and to never come back!

Another characteristic that makes Tenzin Gyatso heroic is the way he inspires others. Since Tenzin’s exile in 1964, he has visited as many as 46 different nations to teach peace. He is a pacifist and encourages people not to fight. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. He says, "I am just a monk from Tibet, no more no less."

Tenzin Gyatso is also very determined. He gets up at 4a.m. to meditate about peace. He says that China will some day stop trying to invade Tibet, even though it is not going so well today. He is determined to free his country.

Tenzin Gyatso is a very good 14th Dalai Lama. If any of the Dalai lamas had a hard job to defend their country from the Chinese international army they would not be as good as Tenzin Gyasto. He is brave, inspiring and determined to free his land.

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." This something that the Dalai often says. The Dalai Lama had one main goal in his life, but it is the most important in Tibet’s history.

Tenzin Gaysto had an amazing life before he became the Dalai Lama. He was born in, Takasta, Tibet. At age 5 he realized he was the Dalai Lama, but was not appointed head of the state till he was at the age of 20. China had been trying to invade Tibet for thousands of years! Naturally this is the Dalai Lama's biggest challenge - to defend his land without using violence.

During his accomplishment he made a protest that changed Tibet’s history. The protest he organized was about how China should leave Tibet. There were millions of people at the protest. The protest was for Tibet's peace and for China to stop attacking them.

After the protest, the Tibetan government was forced into exile. So Dalai Lama went to India to study Buddhism along with 13,000 Tibetan people. Now more than 25,000 people are in exile from their small mountain country.

This man has only had one goal in his life so far, but it is the most important event in Tibetan history.
