Amelia Earhart

by Michelle from Laguna Beach

Amelia Earhart is my hero because she overcame the boundries of only men flying around the world. She is a famous trailblazer for all women. Amelia was born and raised in Atchison, Kansas where she enjoyed the many pleasures in life, thanks to her wealthy grandparents. When Amelia was 8 her father took a job in Des Moines, Iowa, so they moved to the Hawkeye State.

Two years later, Amelia saw her first airplane at the Iowa State Fair and she wasn't impressed with the plane at all. It would be at least 11 years until her interest in aviation took flight. Later into her life, she and her sister moved in with their friends in Chicago. The move was very necessary because their dad got fired from his job in Iowa. When she was about 20 years old she trained as a nurse in Canada for a year. Then she and her sister reunited with their parents in California. Soon after, Earhart went to Columbia University, in New York City, as a pre-med student. One day, she and her father went to an aerial meet and she got to fly in a plane! From then on she knew she wanted to be a pilot.

One day, while Amelia was at work she got a call from H.H. Railey to see if she wanted to be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. Earhart was quick to agree, but since she never had had any experience flying a plane, she was a passenger. The people who flew the plane were named Wilmer Stultz and Slim Gordon. They started their flight in Nova Scotia and ended in Wales with little fuel left. She became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic!

A few years later, Earhart was going to fly around the world with her plane Electra. She and her navigator, Fred Noonman, left from Florida. While flying over the Howland Islands, Itasca recived the last transmission from Electra and it was "KHAQQ calling Itasca. We must be on you but cannot see you... gas is running low..." Unfortunately Amelia was lost somewhere at sea.

There are many different theories about her mysterious disappearance. Some people think she survived and lived on an island with a native fisherman. Others believe she purposely dove the plane into the Pacific Ocean... What do you think?
