What makes an extraordinary woman scientist? One could argue that any woman who became a scientist before the late 1900s was extraordinary. Not only did these women face the intellectual challenges of learning physics or chemistry or biology or math, but they had to do so without encouragement from society at large--and often in the face of outright disapproval from family and friends.
