I still don't get e. e. cummings

Heroism comes in many forms, and different heroes may be part of our lives at different times, in different ways. My father was a hero to me for being dedicated to his family, for working diligently on a book that took him a decade of work to compile, for being a leader to us in practical as well as spiritual matters. E. E. Cummings is a hero to me in a less concrete way. I never met him, but his poetry and artwork have intrigued, mystified, and inspired me.
At the time of this poem's writing, I often found the way I wrote to be somewhat at odds with the way he wrote, and in studying his work I would always wonder how some artists found their chosen paths, especially when those differ from the norm. But as I grew older, I came to realize that whether we draw inspiration from heroes or stumble upon new territory all our own, we are forever and constantly forging ahead to new places we have never been; and that's the important thing. That's the thing that is Life.
