Youth in Hiroshima painted this mural, praying for World Peace and the banishment of nuclear weapons from the planet.
On August 6th in 1945 Hiroshima was completely destroyed and 140,000 people were killed in the devastating heat, violent blast and radioactivity produced by just one atomic bomb.
The Atomic Bomb Dome has stood for 65 years as an somber but urgent appeal to the world: NO MORE HIROSHIMA.
We drew this dome as a symbol of the Negative Legacy of Nuclear Age. We drew the mushroom cloud as a symbol of the Threat of Nuclear Weapons.
The skyscrapers and people in the cloud show the growing, horrifying possibility that another atomic bomb might be detonated some day. The wandering people indicate not only the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki but the possible victims of a future nuclear explosion.
The red Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, has stood calmly for 1,400 years, surviving wars and whispering to us to live in peace.
Doves in flight encourage us to work toward an ideal world where all people embrace communication, non-violence and respect for the life of every creature on this planet.
Let us mention finally that our mural was embellished with the peace messages of students from Kazakhstan, Korea, Mexico and Mongolia in their native languages.
We hope you too will join us in our mission: to denounce all nuclear weapons in all countries and to work hand in hand with the goal of moving the entire world into an era of lasting peace, free from the threat of nuclear holocaust.
