Charles Darwin |
Charles Darwin (the father of evolution as I like to call him) may have been one of the greatest scientists of his time. He invented the theory of natural selection. What is natural selection? What is the importance of it? Was it tough for Darwin to fight against other scientists to prove his theory? All of that will shortly be answered.
Natural selection is a theory that states that the animals with the certain traits to survive live to reproduce and pass on those traits rather than animals with unfavorable traits. Take a giraffe for instance. The giraffes with shorter necks could not reach the fruits on the trees so they died from starvation. On the other hand, the giraffes with longer necks could reach the fruit on the trees so they could live long enough to reproduce and create a race of giraffes with long necks.
Natural selection can help uncover the human race's roots. It can help us figure more out about ourselves so we can possibly develop more life saving medicine. I say you have to find the logs before you can build the house. It could also help us understand what an animal would have to adapt to live on another planet and how.
The process of getting the theory of natural selection be the leading theory of evolution for Charles Darwin was long and hard. His rival in evolution, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, had a different theory. His theory was that to get the fruit on the tree the giraffe would stretch its neck and force itself to adapt. Once the giraffe mated its trait would be passed on. Lamarck was also a great scientist but Darwin won the battle but not the war. (There are more theories to come).
As you can see Charles Darwin discovered one of the greatest things of mankind. He should be remembered as a great scientist and for uncovering one of the most complexing mysteries, evolution.
