Julie Payette was born October 20th, 1963 in Quebec. From 1986 to 1992 she worked at IBM Canada. Julie Payette was invited as a scientist to the IBM research laboratories to Zurich Switzerland. Then she was an astronaut in the Canadian Space Agency. She completed her basic training in Canada and worked as a technical adviser for the International Space Station Mobile Servicing System (MSS).
Julie Payette was the first Canadian to board the international space station. Julie Payette was nominated in 1992 applications for the Canadian space agency astronaut training program. Julie Payette had two sons 16 years old and 3 years old with her husband back in Montreal. Julie Payette says that the space ship is not all good. There is not fresh air or fresh food but there are amazing sights and a lot to learn but it is very scary also.
The international space station (ISS) 96 mission was accomplished in 153 orbits on earth, travelled six million kilometres in 9 days 19 hours and 13 minutes. Julie Payette was the first to board the international space station. Math, Science and engineering is a big part of being an astronaut.
Julie Payette said, "When the selection committee asked me about my ability as a team player I used my choral singing experience to show them I would be an excellent astronaut. My point was that you cannot make beautiful music with dozens of other people unless you can work well as a team. So there’s no question that my musical background has helped me succeed in this amazing career.”(1)
