Lou Gehrig

by Casey from Quakertown

“I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth”

Have you ever heard of a baseball player that basically was hurt for his entire career and still played? Well, if you talk to me, I know one special guy. His name is Lou Gehrig. He was a major league baseball player who played for the New York Yankees. He was a great guy and everyone loved him.

Lou Gehrig had a lot happen in his life. I think he is a hero because he did so much in his career. He won Most Valuable Player. He set so many records. My favorite one is the most consecutive games played. Even though it was broken, I think it was remarkable because he played with seventeen fractures throughout those games. The qualities I look for in a hero are what Lou Gehrig did. He was nicknamed “The Iron Horse”. I admire “The Iron Horse” not only because he was a great baseball player, but also because he had great sportsmanship and he did so much for his team.

On the Fourth of July in 1939, Lou Gehrig made a famous speech. His famous quote was,”I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” This was broadcast all across America. He had a disease called ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Lou Gehrig died soon after. Many hearts of people all over America are still with Lou Gehrig. Mine is one of them.

Lou originally played football, but he still had his heart set on playing baseball. Lou had a great football career but an even better one in baseball. He had a dream to become a famous baseball player even though he played football. That is how much Lou was inspired by baseball.

Lou Gehrig has inspired me to be a baseball player. Now I have a dream of becoming a professional baseball player. I have been playing baseball for five or six years now. Even though I am not the greatest, I still have a dream of being the best I can be.
