When my teacher in school said that we must write an essay on our heroes, my first thought was: who exactly is a hero?
In my opinion a hero is a person who helps other people because he wants to, not because he has to. People have different heroes, because we do not have the same values about the things that are important to us. For someone a hero can be his parents or teachers, for others a hero is a physically challenged person who does not despair over his condition, or the people from the makeover teams who help people build new homes. Heroes are also volunteers, war heroes, sportsmen and doctors.
My hero, however, is Alen Kobilica. He is a very successful model. He worked for many famous designers, also for Giorgio Armani who likes him very much and with his help Alen became famous model all over the world. You can see him in many famous magazines, he walked on many catwalks in Paris, New York and Milan and he shot lots of pictures for many companies. He is not just a model, he is also a sportsman because he studied at University of Sport.
Year 2008 was a difficult year for him, because doctors told him he had a brain tumour. This was a very big shock for him and in that moment he probably could not imagine his life in the future. Doctors told him that if he took therapies, he would recover. But it was not as easy as that. A few months later he lost his sight. Now he has been blind for four years. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic; he believes that one day he will be able to see because the medicine will progress. He has his own modelling agency Alen Kobilica with the motto: "It is what is inside that counts. The essential is invisible to the eye." Every day he sets himself a goal that he tries to achieve.
I mentioned that he is very good at sport. He has a very big wish to appear in swimming competitions at the summer Paralympic games in London this year and at skiing in winter Paralympic games in Sochi 2014. Last year he also established a center for blind sportsmen.
I chose Alen Kobilica for my hero because despite his illness and his inability to see, he does not give up. He still has dreams. I really admire him and I wish that one day in the near future he can see the world again and not just imagine it in his mind. I really hope he will go to Paralympic games in London and succeed. He is my hero!
