Alexandra Scott

by Kendall from Brea

"A determined, courageous, confident and inspiring child with big dreams and accomplishments", are the words used to describe Alexandra Scott; a brave eight year-old girl from Manchester, Connecticut. With the help of her supportive friends and family, her voice became one heard 'round the world, and people everywhere were suddenly trying to walk in her footsteps. Alexandra is one of the bravest, smartest, most wholesome people that anyone could ever meet. Her kindness has affected the lives of hundreds and she will never ever be forgotten. Most people think that heroes are strong people in capes that save the lives of the innocent when they are in need, but a hero can be so much more than that. Take Alexandra for example; she is eight years old, and has already made a bigger impact on the world than most will do in a lifetime. I will always look up to Alexandra for her compassion, bravery, and leadership in trying to make the world a better place.

Alexandra Scott was born in Manchester, Connecticut in the year 1996. When she was just a baby doctors found a tumor on her back, but carefully and skillfully removed it. Then, two days before her first birthday she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a tumor that occurs in the tissues of the sympathetic system in small children or infants. To be closer to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she and her family moved to Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Alexandra, at the age of four, opened up a lemonade stand so that she could give the proceeds to "her hospital", and help other children with cancer. Over the years, people have learned about this charity and have donated their time and money to pediatric research. In total, Alexandra has raised over 900,000 dollars, which she has donated to help find the cure for cancer. She has shown bravery, leadership, and kindness in every way imaginable. The actions performed by Alexandra take a true hero to carry out.

Even though Alexandra was ill and weak throughout most of her short life, she still had the strength to put others before herself. She started her lemonade stand despite what others thought, and it ended up being one of the greatest acts of kindness a person could perform. She stood outside for hours, even when she was sick, to raise money for other kids who had cancer, and that takes great endurance and bravery. With the proceeds that she raised she donated all of the cash to help pediatric doctors find the cure for cancer. She desperately wanted to help other suffering children and ease their pain, which takes much selflessness. Alexandra is a brave, smart, and beautiful girl, who should definitely be considered a childhood hero.

Because of Alexandra's generosity, doctors have been able to advance their knowledge of cancer. With the money that was donated, they come closer and closer every day to finding a cure for this terrible disease. Also, Alexandra's donation has inspired people around the country to start their own charities. Millions of people have donated to Alexandra's cause and have even been encouraged to start their own lemonade stands in honor of her memory. Alexandra's idea stimulated a national fund-raising movement that included sponsors around the country. People around the world have looked upon Alexandra with awe and have decided to help make a difference in the world. Alexandra definitely deserves recognition for her big-heartedness.

Throughout Alexandra's short life, she demonstrated courage, charity, and leadership. She gave to those in need for the pure joy of it. She was hard-working and set the bar high in life. With the help of her friends, family, and random strangers around the world, she was able to donate over $900,000 dollars to help kids everywhere, and find the cure for cancer. I picked Alexandra Scott because she is a role model in every way. She had the courage to start her own charity, despite how old she was. She donated all of her money to help doctors find a cure for cancer, when she could have used the money for so many other things. I learned that sometimes you need to step back and appreciate all of the great things that you have in life. You cannot take anything for granted ever because life is short and you need to make the best of it. Live life to the fullest or as if it were your last day on Earth. Also, I learned that donating your time, not just your money, to charity can be a very rewarding experience. Alexandra may be gone physically but spiritually she will always be with us, guiding us. Thank you Alexandra Scott for all of your great work in trying to make this world a better place.
