Betsy Ross

by Kasey from Laguna Beach

My Hero is Betsy Ross. Betsy Ross was born on January 1, 1752 and died in 1836. She was the sewer of the American flag. She had a lot of sisters, six to be specific. Betsy also had a brother named George. She tried to be a carpenter but she cut her finger with her dad's hand saw. After that experience, she became a seamstress with her mom. Betsy lived in Philadelphia all her life with her family.

My hero Betsy Ross helped the patriot cause by risking her life to sew the first American flag, which was the symbol of the patriots. These actions were heroic because she could have chosen not to make the flag but she helped her uncle, who was responsible for making the flag, anyway. This person impacted my life because it was very dangerous to make this flag and she could have been punished by the loyalists if the British won the war. Whenever I see the flag I will think of her.

Betsy had a lot of husbands. Her first husband was John Ross. When John left for the war she took over his upholstery business. One day she heard a knock on the door and the Americans came to tell her that her husband died in war. After that she re-married and still ran John's shop. Her other husband died in war too and she re-married again. Betsy had a lot kids throughout all her marriages. Betsy Ross had a interesting life and I enjoyed learning about her.
