Do you have a hero? I do and her name is Harriet Tubman. In this essay you will learn all about her and what life was like for Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman is my hero because she did the impossible; she led over 300 slaves to freedom. Even though she new she could die doing this, she didn’t care. She simply wanted her people to be free.

Harriet was born a slave and had a very hard and scary childhood. But she got through all the hard times and decided to help others. Old Rit was Harriet’s mother, and she taught Harriet many things, for example how to sew, cook, make clothing, and pick up cotton. Old Rit was a very wise woman. Old Rit taught Harriet how to be a house slave and all the things she would need to know about it.

The Underground Railroad was just one of the tools Harriet used to free herself and the others. Daddy Ben was Harriet’s father and he taught her everything she would need to know to help her escape. But the most important thing she would need to know is to always follow the North Star. Whenever Harriet got discouraged she would look up to see the North Star and it reminded her to keep on!

The night Harriet escaped was a dark and quiet night. Even though she had a sleeping spell she didn’t let that stop her. She crept out of her cabin and into the woods. Once she spotted the Underground Railroad, she started to follow it. The next morning she heard dogs barking, so she hopped in the river so the dogs would lose her scent. Finally, the dogs were gone and she was safe. One day Harriet met a Quaker. The Quaker asked if Harriet wanted to stay at her safe house while she was escaping. She led the other slaves to the same safe house.

Harriet Tubman is my hero because she led slaves to freedom. She had to do something right in order to stop something wrong. That is why Harriet Tubman is my hero.
