Most people think that heroes are people who are on TV and famous or in the media. My hero is not someone like that. My hero is Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts.

Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia. Juliette’s nickname was Daisy. When Juliette was 25 years old she had an ear infection which was treated with silver nitrate. This damaged her ear and she lost most of her hearing in that ear. In 1886 Juliette married William Mackay “Willy” Low. During the wedding ceremony, a grain of wedding rice got lodged in Juliette’s good ear and it became infected. When the doctor tried to remove the grain of rice it damaged the nerves in Juliette’s ear and Juliette became totally deaf in that ear.

In 1912 Juliette founded Girl Scouts. 11 years later in 1923, Juliette had cancer and kept the fact that she had cancer a secret and kept working for Girl Scouts. On January 17, 1927 Juliette died of cancer in her hometown when she was 66 years old.

Juliette is my hero and I admire her for founding the Girl Scouts. Juliette founded Girl Scouts of America in 1912. Her vision, the desire to do good to others and build strength of mind has enabled thousands of girls to grow up into fine upstanding citizens in the last 95 years. So Juliette has inspired me to grow up to be a kind and caring person as well as a leader.

Juliette Gordon Low was a great person because she founded Girl Scouts of America. If Juliette Gordon Low was never born, I would never have become a Girl Scout. And there would have never been Girl Scouts of America at all if it was not for Juliette Gordon Low.
