A hero is a person who is very brave and who stands up for himself or herself and for other people.

My hero is Jackie Robinson. He was born January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His middle name was Roosevelt in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. He attended Washington Junior High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, and he became a Second Lieutenant. He became the first black major league baseball player in 1947. Robinson was named National League Rookie of the year in 1947. He led the National League in stolen bases in 1947 and 1949. He led all of the second basemen in double plays in 1949,1950 1951 and 1952. He was voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1949. Robinson won the 1949 batting title with .342 as his batting average. He was a member of the National League All Star team from 1949-1954. He led the Dodgers to six World Series and one World Series championship in ten years. He was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He was the first black man to have this honor. He starred in the movie, "The Jackie Robinson Story," in 1950. Time magazine named Robinson on its list of the 100 people in the 20th century who could be a role model to other people.

Jackie Robinson is my hero because he inspired people to never stop fighting until they succeed. He made it possible for other people who have different colored skin to play baseball with major league teams. I would like to be like Jackie Robinson.
