Early Life

Laura Ingersoll was born in Great Barrington, UK in 1775. Following the after of the American Revolution, her father, Thomas Ingersoll, who had sided with the Patriots, moved his family to Canada in 1795. In 1797 she married the United Empire Loyalist, James Secord. James and Laura resided in Queenston, Canada; while her family went on to settle present day Ingersoll, Ontario. On October 13, 1812, James Secord was injured at the Battle of Queenston Heights, part of the War of 1812 that had been declared in June.

Attack

On May 27, 1813 the American Army launched another attack across the Niagara River. On the evening of June 21, Laura became aware of plans for a surprise attack on troops led by British Lieutenant James Fitzgibbon at Beaver Dams. Laura knew she had to do something so she went and told her husband but he didn’t believe her. Laura set out early the next morning to warn Lieutenant Fitzgibbon herself. She lied and said everyone knew about his plan, he didn’t care that they knew. He was still going to carry on with his plan. She told everyone what the Lieutenant's plan was, they finally believed her and were ready for the Lieutenant. This story has been something of a Canadian legend.

Life After

Over the years, Laura and her husband James FitzGibbon asked the government for help. She thought the government would help them after Laura helped to save Canada but she was disappointed. The government didn’t think what she did was so great. The biggest award she ever got was around 200 hundred dollars. That was a lot of money back then but I think she wanted to be appreciated but sadly nobody thought she was great.

Now She Is Gone

Now she is gone though now a lot of people appreciate her. It was sad that back when she was alive people didn’t appreciated her but now I lot of people believe that if she wasn’t alive Canada wouldn’t be here. I think if she wasn’t here that Canada wouldn’t be alive, so in my belief she was a great person who never gave up and always tried hard and I think that makes a good person.
