Nelson Mandela

by Vano from Tbilisi

In person’s life, it is very important to imagine a hero in your mind. A Hero is an example of kindness that has an influence in your life.

The most important person for me became Nelson Mandela, who spent twenty-seven years in prison in South Africa. It was at Kabwe Prison in Zambia. He was a man who fought for freedom and human rights. Despite anyone’s beliefs or opinions to the country,we are all equal.

The garden at Kabwe Prison inspired Nelson Mandela. Gardening helped Mandela increase his self-esteem. It was his way of escaping what was around him. He looked at all the empty space they had on the roof and how it got sun whole day.

After years of asking to use the space for a garden, he received permission. He asked for sixteen large oil drums and asked the staff to cut them in half for him. Then he filled each half with soil and created thirty-two giant flowerpots.

A garden was one of few things in prison that he could control. It gave him the simple but important satisfaction of planting a seed, watering it, watching it grow and then harvesting it. It was small taste of freedom for him. In some ways he saw the garden as being like his life. He thought that a leader must also look after his garden, as he too plants seeds and then watches, cultivates and harvests the results.

This comparison and these ideas become important to people worldwide and attractive for 21st Century. This is a higher standard of thinking than has ever been achieved by human beings. We now have to try and follow his views, and become more kind and sensible with each other and be just happy.
