Peritas

by Lena from Minsk

My hero is Alexander the Great’s favourite dog, Peritas.

Peritas was a greyhound. Greyhounds are very lovable dogs. They are very loyal to their families and always show love to their family members. They are very intelligent, patient and quiet.

I think it is true about Peritas because Alexander and the dog became friends. The dog was with his master on all his marches. During one of the battles an elephant of Darius III of Persia attacked Alexander the Great. Peritas defended his master. The dog attacked the elephant but the elephant killed him.

Ancient philosopher and historian Plutarchus wrote that though Alexander was strong, courageous and enduring, he cried when Peritas died.

This story tells what a true friendship is. Peritas is my hero because he is a true and devoted friend. He didn’t leave his master in a dangerous situation and gave his life for him.
