Sidney Crosby was born on August 7,1987. His parents raised Sidney in a small Dartmouth, Nova Scotia home. When he was only two when Crosby started playing hockey agasint his dryer. The reason for this start at such a young age is because his father was a goalie who was drafted to Montreal in 1984. At age two and a half, Sidney's father painted the floor with white, red and blue lines; just like a hockey rink. Then at the age of three Sidney got his first pair of skates and learned to skate. Below is a picture of his dryer after a years of playing hockey on it.
Sidney excelled way more then other boys his age. Crosby won many awards at a very young age. Being the best had its negative and positive effects. If he actually wanted to give himself a challenge he had to play with boys older than him. At the age of 13, he joined a Midget AAA team. But the province banned him from playing on the provincial hockey team. Their reason was that he was too "young". His Father said, "It was cruel what they did to him. They treated him like he was a criminal."
At the age of 14 Sidney joined the Dartmouth Subways. He scored 95 goals in only 74 games! He also had 98 assists and finished the season with 193 points. That year his team won 61 games while losing 17 times. The Dartmouth Subways played in the 2002 Air Canada Cup in Bathurst New Brunswick. Sidney managed one goal in the final. Crosby also led the tournament with 11 goals. Plus he got MVP of the whole tournament and most goals scored. After a great season with the Dartmouth Subways, Sidney had to make a decision. Crosby wanted to stay in Nova Scotia and play hockey for the Halifax Mooseheads as an underage player, but he was not allowed to so he decided to go to Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in Minnesota. Crosby played 57 games with them and scored 72 goals and 90 assists for a combined total of 162 points. The crazy thing is that he was only 15!! Sidney set scoring records with Shatuck-St. Mary's for most goals, assists and points.
The summer of 2003 was very big for Sidney Patrick Crosby. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League had their draft and the Rimouski Oceanic had the first pick. They chose Sidney Crosby. As a rookie in the QMJHL he played amazingly well. Sidney played 59 games as a 16 year old. He got 54 goals, 81 assists for 135 points. He won many trophies like the RDS Trophy, Michel Briere Trophy, Paul Dumont Trophy as well as the Jean Belliveau Trophy. He also got on the All Rookie Team and First All-Star Team. The NHL was about to hold their draft to see who would get the first overall pick. The winner was the Pittsburgh Penguins (because they are amazing). On July 30, 2005 the Penguins selected Crosby as the 1st overall pick.
Sidney Crosby played 81 games in his first season and finished with 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points. He got his first point, an assist, against Martin Brodeur on October 5, 2005. Then he scored his first goal three days later. On December 16, 2005 he became the new Alternate Captain. Then on April 13, 2006, Crosby broke Mario Lemieux's franchise record for assists by a rookie. Crosby scored his 100th point four days later. Sidney had a great rookie season, but the Penguins did not. The Penguins only won 22 games and finished last in the Eastern Conference. But that summer Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Stall joined the team. In the 2006-07 season Crosby won the Hart Memorial Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and the Art Ross Trophy. He also became the youngest Captain in NHL history and the youngest player to be named to the 1st All-Star Team. Crosby signed a five-year $43.5 million dollar contract extension.
Then in the 2007-2008 season Crosby had an ankle injury and missed out on 28 of the 82 games. After his injury he led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals, but lost to the Detroit Red Wings. This year Crosby ended up third in the league for points (103). He got 33 goals and 70 assists. Now Crosby is in the middle of the 2008-2009 playoffs.
