We all have secrets. Some are things we’ve done wrong while others are things we’ve been told not to share. If you could share your secret with the world anonymously, would you? Well, it turns out over a thousand people across the country and around the world would.
Frank Warren, the creator of Post Secret, has helped over a thousand people tell their secrets to the world. A few years ago, while Warren was going through a difficult time, he turned to art. As one of his art projects Warren handed out blank postcards to strangers asking them to send in a secret. Even after the project was over, they kept coming in. So, Warren decided to start the blog, PostSecret.com. After only two years, millions of people are going there every Sunday to see the new secrets posted.
Warren didn’t mean to start anything big, but he did. Now, Post Secret is everywhere. He posts ten to twenty new secrets every Sunday, the book, PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, which contains over 400 secrets, and Warren has a traveling exhibit of over 2,000 postcards. Some of the postcards were even featured in the All-American Rejects music video for their song Dirty Little Secret. Also, filmmakers are asking him about doing a TV documentary. He’s even getting awards. Time magazine called the blog one of the 50 “coolest” websites. Some even say “His blog is the worst-kept secret.”
The reason it’s enjoyed so much is because it’s simple. Some even think it’s a form of free therapy. All the website has are the secrets, instructions on how to send in your secrets, a picture of his home mail box, and the Suicide Help Hotline number which Warren has volunteered at for a long time. Another reason it has become so popular is because everyone has something to hide and here is a way to tell people.
Warren has affected many people’s lives, including mine, because he started something that brought over a million strangers together. Frank Warren has become many people’s hero because he gave them a way to share their secrets and mostly he gave everyone a little bit of hope.
