Lekha Singh

by Abigail Richardson from MY HERO Staff

Lekha Singh is a fine art photographer, filmmaker, and activist. Museums throughout the United States have displayed her photography exhibitions, and her photographs have been featured in museum collections, magazines, and books, including National Geographic's The Other Side of War: Women's Stories of Survival and Hope. Singh's work as a photographer exposed her to the stories of victims of warfare around the world, leading her to co-direct the independent documentary Beyond Right and Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness. She has dedicated her life to philanthropic enterprises, serving on the Board of Directors for many organizations, including Women for Women International, Free the Children, and Aidmatrix Foundation, which Singh founded in the early 2000s.

Thanks to her international reputation, Singh has had the opportunity to travel all over the world, and to draw artistic inspiration from her travels. Singh has exhibited her photographic work since 2004 in American museums in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Washington D.C. and San Francisco. Her work can be found in permanent collections such as LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), ICP (the International Center of Photography, New York), Ruben Museum of Art (New York), among others. Singh has published her photographs in several books such as The Other Side of War, Women’s Stories of Survival & Hope.

Her recent exhibition ‘Women Carry the World’ draws attention to the living conditions of different women around the world. It consists of almost one hundred photographs that contain a social and emotional charge and show the day-to-day life of women in very different situations and stages of life. Elite sportswomen, pregnant women, water carriers, women with sunburnt faces and teenagers are some of the characters that the artist has captured during more than 25 years traveling around different countries including India, Kenya, Morocco and the United States, among many others.

The portraits reflect how millions of women carry millions of kilos across millions of kilometers of the planet on their heads, backs, shoulders, or arms. For centuries, women have carried children, firewood, water, food, or baskets of cotton. Each of Singh's images presents the culture of a country or an ethnic group through everyday life and bears witness to the harsh living conditions of these women.

Singh is also recognized for her documentaries. In 2012, she directed Beyond Right and Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness, a film that explores the role of forgiveness in the search for justice in Rwanda, Israel / Palestine, and Northern Ireland.
