I wanted to created a portrait of Marsha to show my appreciation for her. Being a transgender individual myself, Marsha is a person who I greatly look up to as a role model.
MY HERO: Marsha P. Johnson
Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender women, was known for her activism and liberation for gay rights; she was in the frontline at the infamous Stonewall Riots in 1969 as well as many other gay liberation events. Marsha co-founded the organization Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a place for queer, gay, transgender, and gender non-conforming individuals to come together. STAR was not only a radical political collective, but also a place where homeless queer youth can find housing and support. Marsha helped so many people in her lifetime; being the definition of a true activist and hero.
