Emiliano Zapata

by Montserrat from San Diego

"It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees!"

Emiliano Zapata is a hero because in the Mexican Rvolution, Zapata was the leader of a peasant uprising that forced wealthy Mexican land owners to return stolen land to the people. Emiliano supported his family at age 17, when the death of his dad happened; he trained and sold some horses that he had. Emiliano's leadership inspired many people to do many good things in life like the ones he did when he was younger.

Emiliano Zapata was born on 8, 1879. In San Miguel Anenecuilco. "Emiliano Zapata spent his early years as a mule driver as a horse trainer, as a cowboy, and also as a sharecropper in his native Morelos." In 1909, his village was threatened with the loss of its land because of claims by the owner of a nearby hacienda. The peasants who elected Emiliano Zapata to lead them in their occupation in Morelos, were known as Zapatistas.

When Emiliano was just 17, his father died. His father was Gabriel Zapata, and his mother was Cleofas Salazar. His father left Emiliano to look after his brothers and sisters. Emiliano was the ninth out of ten children. Emiliano supported his family by selling and training his horses. Emiliano had to support his three sisters and his mother. Eventually, Emiliano did support his family very successfully. He did all he could, trying his best to at least feed his family.

Since his death, Emiliano Zapata has become one of Mexico's national heroes. His famous words, "It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees!" inspired the men and woman of Southern Mexico to rise up and join him in his fight to give land back to people. During a week in 1911, Zapata continued to build his organization in Morelos, training and equipping his men and consolidating his authority as their leader. Even though Emiliano had been ordered to cease all hostilities, he and 5,000 men entered and captured Cuernavaca, the capital of his native state of Morelos. still to this day people from Mexico are inspired by Emiliano's great life when he was young. He accomplished many great things! People have known Emiliano for being such a great hero.
