Jackie Robinson

by Daniel from USA

A hero can be a person or even an animal. My hero is a famous baseball player. His name is Jackie Robinson. Jackie was born in 1919. He died in 1972. He was 53 years old. Jackie was born in Cairo, Georgia. He also lived in Kansas City, Brooklyn, New York, and Pasadena, California.

Jackie Robinson played shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs. He led them to league pennants. He played with them during World War II. After he played for Kansas City, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945. Then he got signed to the Montreal Royals in 1946. One year later, Jackie decided to go back to the Dodgers. That was a good decision because they won six National League Pennants. They also won the 1955 World Series. Without Jackie Robinson, the Brooklyn Dodgers might not have won the World Series. Jackie Robinson once said, “Baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he’s losing; nobody wants you to quit when you’re ahead.”

Jackie Robinson wasn’t only a great baseball player. He was the first African-American to ever play major league baseball. The MLB foundation would not allow any African-American people to play major league baseball. But the Brooklyn Dodgers were willing to take a chance and they signed him. It was not easy for Jackie in the Major Leagues. Many people were not happy about an African-American playing baseball. Yet, Jackie thought that everyone should be treated equally. Once Jackie Robinson got into the MLB, he was a huge inspiration for a lot of children and adults.

Jackie Robinson also served his country in the U.S. Army. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Jackie joined the Army. Jackie liked serving his country. But before he knew it, the war was over.

Jackie Robinson is a very important person. I think that Jackie Robinson is a role model. A lot of people look up to him. He inspires others to play sports. I think that he was a leader. He stood up for his race and didn’t give up his belief that all men should be treated fairly. When I heard about Jackie Robinson, all I wanted to do was play baseball. He inspired me so much that I play infield now. He also made baseball one of my favorite sports.

Jackie Robinson taught me to never give up when you really want something. I once wasn’t so good at football, so I practiced. I kept practicing and practicing. Now I am one of the best tight ends in my league. Jackie Robinson is not just an athlete to me; he is a hero to me!
