The\r\n MY HERO Project is very pleased to announce the winner of the first \r\never ENGAGE Award, given at The 8th Annual MY HERO International Film \r\nFestival: Olivia's Birds and the Oil Spill, by Lynne Cherry, a \r\ndocumentary short from her Young Voice For The Planet series. The film \r\ndocuments 11-year-old Olivia Bouler's deep connection with the natural \r\nworld, in particular, with the Gulf of Mexico, and how her love of birds\r\n drove her to create 500 bird paintings to raise $200,000 for Audubon's \r\nefforts to rescue birds after the BP Oil spill.

Olivia goes further and visits congressmen and the Secretary \r\nof the Interior with her message: no offshore oil drilling, get off \r\nfossil fuels and invest in renewable energy. Her message resonates with \r\nthe media and reaches millions of people around the world. She receives \r\nmany fan letters including one from Bill Clinton.

This\r\n win by Olivia's Birds and the Oil Spill marks the inauguration of this \r\nspecial award from the nonprofit Life Giving Moments, which generously \r\nbestows a $500 cash prize along with the ENGAGE Award. Life Giving \r\nMoments presents the award to the film that best encourages positive \r\nsocial activism by young people. The organization encourages kids to be \r\nproactive and engage in positive actions on their own, without waiting \r\nfor adults to tell them what to do. From a field of deserving nominees, \r\nthe board of Life Giving Moments selected Cherry's film.
