Jacqueline in a Flowery Straw Hat
by Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973)
Sculpture
One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th Century, Picasso wasn't just a monumental talent, he was heroically prolific throughout his life. As a youth, he painted in a realistic style but as he grew he became known for his experimenting with new styles, theories and techniques. Along with Marcel Duchamp and Henri Matisse, he defined the revolutionary developments in the "plastic arts" - moulding, sculpting or carving - during the first decades of the 20th century. This terra-cotta base relief is just one example.
