Painted by Amy Sherald, this portrait of the first African-American first lady Michelle Obama is exhibited at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery since 2018. This painting has made the artist became one of the first African Americans commissioned by National Portrait Gallery to paint presidential portrait. As public figure, Obama has used her influence to exert positive impact on women's empowerment, racial justice, poverty awareness, LGBT rights, and so on. As a successful lawyer and the first African-American first lady, she became a role model for women, especially African American women and girls. Her influence was so profound that a book titled Michelle Obama's Impact on African American Women and Girls was published in 2018 to explain and explore how Obama has encouraged African American women and girls to gain positive achievements.
