He created series of artwork on history narratives of Fredrick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, John Brown, and the Great Migration series of African Americans from the South to the North in sought of a better life. This art work, Through Forest, Through Rivers, Up Mountains, is from Lawrence's series dedicated to Harriet Tubman. The panel pictures a group of African American people crossing through the forest and river, going up toward mountains in the distance. The sun, or a bright star is above the mountain, symbolizes the freedom and a better life they are heading toward to. The woman in a red robe in the lower right corner could be Harriet Tubman, or simply a representation of "conductors" who had guided people to freedom via the Underground Railroad network.
