Nicholas Sparks |
Nicholas Sparks, the author, is my hero because of his ability to express deep emotions in his writing. His subject material ranges from romance to experiences with illness and death. He’s best known for putting raw emotion of young love and family drama into his novels and can often bring a reader to tears. His books are typically enjoyed by women and young adults.
His first attempt at writing was while he was in college. He had suffered an injury while at Notre Dame and was not allowed to run. His mother, frustrated with his attitude, told him to “write a book”. The book as he describes was placed in the attic. Spark’s first published book was The Notebook. It was released in 1995 and it has been considered his most successful work. Sparks was earning roughly $40K a year when Warner Books bought the rights to the book for $1 Million. The next impressive thing that happened for Sparks involved The Notebook being transferred into 45 different languages. Nicholas was the first writer to ever go on the longest book tour in history. But since The Notebook, his popularity has grown.
Sparks has written over fifteen books to date. Some of his other stories, like The Notebook, have been further developed into successful motion pictures: Dear John, Message in a Bottle and Nights in Rodanthe. He has received tremendous praise from critics ranging from Entertainment Weekly and People to the Associated Press. He also holds the title of being the # 1 New York Times Best Selling Author.
I think Sparks’ success as a writer can be attributed to his observations in life. At certain times when his life was great, there would be, as he described, a U-turn. The sudden and tragic deaths of his parents in separate accidents, the loss of a younger sister to brain cancer and learning that a son was diagnosed with a learning disorder allowed him to draw from those experiences of love, loss and believing in something when no one else would.
In conclusion Nicholas Sparks is still continuing to catch the hearts of millions of readers with his touching, warm-hearted books. It is my hope that he continues creating such wonderful stories that take us to another place and time and help us to remember what things are important in life.
