Chesley B. Sullenberger III, who has been a US Airway pilot for 29 years, saves 155 passengers’ lives on January 15, 2009 and becomes a well known hero. He was born to an educated family, a dentist father, and a teacher mother, he also has a sister. He grew up in Kansas, and gained his first pilot’s license when he was 14. His sister said that he was interested in flying since he was a kid.

Furthermore, Chesley was employed by US Airway since 1980, and has gained over 40 years of flying experiences. Moreover, he has flown across North America, South America, and Europe. On January 15, 2009, he was the pilot of US Airway Flight 1549 from New York to North Carolina. A transient period of time after taking off, the plane was hit by a flock of birds; both the Airbus A320's engines were disabled. Sullenberger immediately took control of the airplane from the First Officer and made a perfect emergency water landing on the Hudson River in New York, known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Many witness were shocked because the airplane did not sink, it was floating on the river; no passenger was injured also. How fabulous the landing is! “I just can’t believe how well he did. We’re all alive because of him,” said by Beth McHugh, one of the passengers on US Airways Flight 1549.

A hero gives people a feeling of security, and people need heroes to rely on during a troubled time or a serious jeopardy. Chesley is a typical example of a hero. He not only saved all passengers’ lives, but also sets a role model for citizens with his altruistic spirit. He put his passengers’ lives on the first place and solves the jeopardy wonderfully. He inspires people by performing heroic acts and intelligent decisions by landing on the river. His action demonstrates that there are unselfish and trust worth people in the society, and it evokes people’s sense of altruism.
