Duff Goldman

"Life would be nothing without blow torches" ~Duff Goldman~

There are plenty of television shows that are a “must see” every time you know they’re on. Well Ace of Cakes, a television show about Duff Goldman and the crew of Charm City Cakes, is one of those shows. Goldman is known for building extravagant cakes, having a bald head, and his unusual laugh. Goldman works hard as a cake decorator and he pleases his customers, with his multiple creations. Duff Goldman is my hero because he followed his dream, he has a lot of creativity, and is very skilled at baking.

Goldman was raised in a line of artists. His mother was a sculptor and his grandmother was a great baker. Duff has always been into cooking. He went to the University of Maryland for East Asian History and Ethics. When Duff came across a restaurant, he claimed that is was the finest restaurant in Boston. He was so inspired by that one restaurant that he applied to work there. Soon after he was hired to make corn bread and biscuits. Duff then said that this was a turning point in his career; this is what he wanted to do. So he started to follow his dream. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in East Asian History, and a minor in ethics. He soon after changed his schools and his major. He attended Corcoran College of Art and the Culinary Institute of America. Duff followed his dream because he loved what he was doing.

After he graduated from Corcoran College of Art and the Culinary Institute of America, Duff entered in a Food Network Challenge of cakes. He used so much creativity in his piece. That it was by far one of the most favorite; however when moving his masterpiece to the final table it dropped. Despite all the hard work that he put into that sculpture he had so much fun that, when it fell, he just started laughing and making a joke out of it. Soon after, Duff was offered a television show on the Food Network, known as “Ace of Cakes”. Duff took the job where he and his crew make several cakes. Anyone that can be creative with the several difficult ways of carving a cake, also the chocolate and sugar work, is right to be my hero.

Duff is also undeniably a successful business owner. People from all around the United States order his cakes, paying several thousand dollars for each creation. Since every cake is different they range from $1,000 to $20,000. So they make anywhere between $15,000 to $300,000 in a week's work. They make about 15 cakes a week on average. Duff is also successful because he is working with the people he likes the most, his friends.

In conclusion Duff Goldman is my hero because he followed his dream and is now one of the best cake decorators in the United States. Duff is very creative in everything that he does, even if it is random “breakfast cook-off’s”. And he is very much of a successful business owner. And these are all of the reasons why I look up to Chef Duff Goldman.
