Louis Riel

by Thomas from Barrie

This is a story about Louis Riel son of Louis Riel Sr. and Julie Lagimodi. It started in October 22, 1844. Louis Riel was born on the Red River settlement (now the area around Winnipeg, Manitoba). Louis Riel is a hero because he led a resistance movement against the Canadian government in the Canadian northwest. He did this for the French speaking people of the Metis.

Louis Riel was first educated on the Red River settlement by priests. Then he won a scholarship at the age of 13. He won it to study in Montreal, Quebec. Later in the years Louis Riel got married to Marguerite Monet which he had 3 kids with. The first child's name is Jean Louis, the second Marie Anglique and the third died at infancy.

In 1868 Riel became the leader of the Metis. Over the next 2 years he took advantage of a gap between the departure of the Hudson's Bay Company and then appointed a Canadian governor. He did this to see if the government would provide some protection for French language rights. The government didn't really care and declined the protection. Louis Riel was furious.

After the government declined the protection of the French speaking Metis. Louis Riel formed a rebellion to enforce the French rights. Later on the rebellion failed and soon after Louis Riel was exiled from Canada for 5 years. Louis Riel became an American citizen to continue to keep fighting for the Metis.

Soon after Louis Riel was accused of treason and the murder of Thomas Scott (killed at the beginning of the rebellion). Louis Riel was assigned a priest for his trial. That did not help. A couple of weeks later Louis Riel was executed. Louis Riel was a hero to all Metis.
