Helen Keller was a hero because she had to overcome challenges that would have been hard to defeat. Helen Keller is a great example of somebody who conquered physical disabilities. She was inspiring to most people. She helped older people, ill people, and people without a family. She helped these people for many years. She also gave to hundreds of charities. She would see people in hospitals. That’s why Helen Keller was a hero.
Helen Keller came into the world a healthy baby on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen’s father, Captain Arthur H. Keller, had fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Helen’s mother’s name was Kate Adams Keller. Helen has two older half brothers. She was very smart. She was bright for many years, even with her blindness and deafness. She loved to write and cook. She loved life even with all her challenges. She was energetic, loving, charming, brave, and adventurous. These were a few facts about Helen’s early life.
Helen Keller had to overcome many challenges that were very hard to overcome. Here are just a few. Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing at about the age of 1 ½. She then was turned off by the world. Helen had to deal with scarlet fever, which led to her being blind and deaf. Her teacher (Anne Sullivan) had died on October 20, 1936. Helen’s father died in the summer of 1896 (40 years earlier than Anne Sullivan). On March 21, 1960 Polly Thomas (one of Helen’s teachers) died too. Helen had been deeply saddened. She also lost Mr. Anagnos. When Helen went to Perkins she meet Mr. Anagnos and they were best friends right away. Also, when her boyfriend came over to her house, her brother saw him and thought he was going to bring harm to her, but he didn’t. All he wanted to do was marry Helen. But when Helen’s brother saw him he told Helen’s mother. Then Helen’s mother told Helen’s brother to get the gun and go outside. Then when Helen’s boyfriend saw the gun he ran far away and Helen never got the chance to get married. These were a few of Helen Keller’s challenges that she had to overcome.
Helen had many contributions, and here are some of them. Helen wrote her very own book and it became a hit as soon as it went out to the stores. Then she wrote another book. Helen also gave people hope with what she did and also what she did with her life, like going to college. Helen and Anne began making speaking engagements to raise funds for the AFB (American Foundation for the Blind). Helen wrote two autobiographies. Helen, Anne and Polly helped organize an international conference of workers for the blind. Helen also persuaded President Herbert Hoover and his wife to give a reception for the conference. As you can see, Helen Keller had many contributions.
Helen Keller had many awards, honors and recognitions, and here are just a few. When Helen, Anne and Polly moved to New York they didn’t know what to do. Then Hollywood answered their question. The new motion picture industry wanted to make a film about Helen’s life. Helen traveled all over the world inspiring people. At the age of twenty–four, Helen Keller became world famous. She wrote a heartfelt story about her teacher (Anne Sullivan). She wrote two books, The Story Of My Life, and The World I Live In. She said “I will always - as long as I have breath - work for the handicapped.” In her long and full life, Helen did all that she could to help the handicapped of the world. She did a lot of fundraising and education efforts, and this was the greatest gift she ever gave. Helen was accepted into Harvard University. Helen graduated cum laude from Radcliffe in 1904. Those were the awards, honors, and recognitions she had.
Helen Keller had a lot of character traits. Helen Keller was intelligent in her own way. For example: she could try to speak but it was hard to understand her. She also learned 4,000 sign language words in four months. She also wrote two books in her whole lifetime. Helen Keller also had courage and bravery. She was brave because she let Anne help her but she was scared of Anne. But when she got the chance to see the world with Anne she was ready to do anything with Anne. Finally, Helen was very energetic. When she got older and Anne was still helping her she traveled all over the world with Anne. When she was younger she always wanted to play with her two brothers.
On June 1, 1968 Helen Keller died. Helen Keller lived from 1880 to 1968. She lived a long, full, happy life. She was a helpful loving person and will never be forgotten and the charities she gave to will be much better now thanks to her.
As you can see, even though Helen Keller had been differently abled she will also be with us and in our hearts and will always be with the blind and deaf people too. Helen Keller was still a wonderful, energetic, outgoing and loving person.
