Black Iron Tarkus

by Trinity from Bonham

Tarkus hails from a place called Berenike, a Nation-State inside the game's country connected by the local game world, Lordran. He was one of the many knights who marched into Lordran to find the cure to the ever looming Curse of the Undead. The Curse affected anyone who had no humanity left inside them; however, they would become Hollow if all of their meaning left them too, and become a husk that would wait for weary travelers to pass by, and murder them. This Curse took out the vast majority of the warriors who lived inside of Berenike, and the other surrounded countries of Lordran. Tarkus was the only one from Berenike to successfully fulfill the first part of the Undead Prophecy. The Undead Prophecy was stated that only a fearless warrior, who was Undead, and who left the Undead Asylum and rang both the bell from the Church in the Undead Parish, and the Bell inside, beginning of the path to Lost Izalith, the earth. Upon ringing both bells, the gate to Sen's Fortress would open, and the second part of the Prophecy would begin.

Tarkus, ventured into the fortress and fought his way to the top. Once at the top, he came face to face with a giant Iron Golem. Tarkus charged at the beast, with only a great sword and shield. His strength prevailed throughout the fight, and over powered the golem single handedly. It fell to its death, smashing its way all the way through the fortress below. Tarkus was victorious, and was brought up to the great and powerful city of Anor Londo. Before he left Sen's Fortress, he carved his name with a piece of blessed chalk, which would summon his phantom if there was one who needed his help. The city itself was massive and elegant, looks fit for any God to rule over. Every building towers above you menacingly, and the architecture was so clean and perfect it felt almost unreal.

Tarkus, upon arriving to the city, was brought back, not because of the sight of the city, but by the path in his way. The path in front of him was an impassible rotary pillar, and would not be able to cross without aid from someone on the other side; however, Tarkus was alone and knew no one inside the city that could help him. Determined as he was, he still fought to progress, and spotted a nearby building which had a support beam built into the bridge he was currently standing on. He took this path, with careful footing in his large armor, and worked his way onto and up the support, onto the balcony of the building. He was met by a stained glass window, hard as steel yet still fragile. One mighty swing of his sword shattered a hole large enough for him to enter. Inside, there was no way for him to pass by; all the pathways on his level were sealed. The only way was up and above it all, in the rafters. So, Tarkus climbed up the rafters, and took his time walking around on the narrow ledges; however, the over-encumbrance of his armor and little room to walk was too much for him to bear and slipped, plummeting to his death.

All of his life achievements, and everything he had worked hard for on his holy pilgrimage to bring peace to the dying era, was in vain. Escaping the Asylum, ringing both bells, and defeating Sen's Fortress, was all stripped away from him in those seconds towards his death. The beings in Anor Londo had no mercy, for those who did were no longer there. They, known as the "Painting Guardians," retrieved the body of Tarkus from the floor in the middle of the room, known as the "Painting Room," and carried him off into the corner out of sight to rot away; Although, he is still alive in some form. The carving he left behind in Sen's Fortress still glows true. Tarkus still waits for those who are as strong as he was, to reach the top of the Fortress and call him back from his grave in aid, so they may reach Anor Londo. Tarkus answers each prayer of his sign, knowing that those who are coming after him are those who seek to complete the prophecy, and knows that they can, and will, surpass him.

Extra Info

Please note that most of the information was taken from people who have played all the way through Dark Souls, and have taken time to research through item descriptions and what From Software has given us in information. Most of the information was tested severely, and this is the best depiction of the life of Tarkus. This can change at anytime due to majority of the story-line having a distorted time period, and anything that may be found today that could conflict with this information.
