Alexander Graham Bell

by Zach from Calgary

I choose Alexander Graham Bell because he invented the telephone. Because of him he inspired people to make the telephone better and better. Another reason I chose him is he was very determined. He knew a lot about deaf people; his mom was deaf and when he went to Boston, from Scotland. He taught deaf kids at the Boston School for the Deaf. Not only was his mom deaf but later on in life, when he got married, his wife was deaf too. Another reason why I chose him is because he made one of the world's fastest boat as it went 60 miles per hour. That's still really fast now! He was very determined. Marketers did not want to produce or endorse a "telephone". Marketers told him we pay you to make the telegraph. He did not care what they thought. He wanted to make the telephone and now the telephone is one of the most used things in the world!!!!!!

On March 3rd 1847 Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is surprising that he was not a very good student as a kid. His mom was deaf and she was a very talented painter. When he got old enough he moved to Boston and taught deaf kids to speak. He is so cool he even became a friend of Helen Keller. He was the only kid in the whole family who survived - his younger brother Edward died in 1867 because of tuberculosis, then his oldest brother died from tuberculosis in 1870. Also in 1870, August 1st he moved to Canada. He married a deaf girl named Mabel from the school in Boston. He had 3 children - 2 girls Elise and Marian and one boy named Robert but he did not survive . He had a long life and died in 1922.

Alexander had many accomplishments in his life. His first invention was a machine for a flour mill when he was 12. His most famous invention was on March 7th 1876, when he got a patent for the first telephone. What he started is now called Bell Media. He also made lots of kites and also invented the photo phone. He invented a hydrofoil boat that went 60 miles per hour and an airplane called the Silver Dart. When he was young, he taught his dog to say "I love you grandma." He also invented a glove to help deaf people learn to talk. In 1897 Alexander became the president of the National Geographic Society. He liked to play chess a lot. Alexander was very interested in the Mohawk people as there was a Mohawk village near Brantford. He learned their language and he became an honorary member of the tribal group.

So we adventured to the past and saw how much the telephone has changed. Alexander Graham Bell had done a lot of things from building a machine that you can talk into and miles away the person that you want talk to can hear you talk. He built one of the first airplanes, the Silver Dart. He also made one of the fastest boats in the world that could go 60 miles per hour. On1922 August 2nd Alexander Graham Bell died but his ideas live on. Alexander made possible our future telephones and inspired people to make the I-phone. In 20 years or so a new type of phone will come out better then we have now. More and more new ideas will come in and go out but there is one thing for sure is that you can never change the first telephone. THE END
