Amy Brown

by Brett from Shippensburg, Pa

Amy Brown resides in the Pacific Northwest with her family and was born in Bellingham, Washington in 1972. That is where she grew up with the love of fantastical tales and mystical creatures. She went to work in an art gallery called Festival of Art. While there, she began to develop her own taste and style of art. She was given the opportunity to paint on an empty frame that she had lying around and she chose her medium to be a fantastical creature called a faerie. She resides in the Pacific Northwest with her family. Amy Brown is my hero because she’s very inspirational, started out as an amateur artist, and from her love of art.

Brown inspired and developed an enormous following of people or fans, from her take on what the faerie realm consists of and looks like. “It comes from the magical ability of the artist to put pigment on paper in such a manner that you feel as though you’re at a window, peeking into a real world,” Brown said. Some of her inspiration came from movies -- The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and The Legend -- and other artists. She is very forthright about her artistic influences -- Brian Froud, Michael Parkers, Alan Lee, and Arthur Rackham -- but doesn’t slavishly imitate them in any way or form.

Brown has no formal training but her art has been the inspiration to a growing imagination of a new and exciting realm of beings. While at the art gallery she learned about color, layout, design, and various art and framing techniques. She had always been surrounded by art on a daily basis and read every art, framing, business, and printing article that was available in the gallery.

Brown’s art has expanded from paintings and tattoos to a whole licensed line of articles and merchandise for stores; which not only includes stickers and postcards, but clothing, books, and figurines. She got countless calls wanting her products to sell in various stores across the United States.

Therefore, what started out as just a childhood belief of what the faerie realm was, has been transformed into a fantastical world of beings. She will keep making and selling her wonderful works of art till the end of her days. I have chosen Amy Brown as my hero for the love of her art. She gives inspiration and hope to others because she herself started out with no training at all and made it into something fantastical. She has proven that anyone can paint or create a piece of art but it takes years of practice to make a masterpiece.
