Ari Seth Cohen

by Ashlee from Napier

In a world where beauty is young; beauty is flawless and beauty is very hard to be Ari Seth Cohen is celebrating the beauty with in people older than the cut line.

Ari Seth Cohen aged 31, grew up in San Diego and was very close to his grandmothers. One of Ari's grandmothers named Bluma inspired Ari to do what he does and to be who he is. "My grandma was one of my best friends," he says. "She was a wonderful example of getting older, staying active and staying creative as you get older." Ari was always interested in art and fashion and used to draw pictures of fancy older ladies as a kid. He collected the drawings in a book, he says, and called it something like "Fantastic Ladies with Amazing Style."

Ari Seth Cohen later studied art history in Seattle. Even later on he moved to New York following after what his grandma told him "that's where you have to go if you want to be creative." He didn't have anything in particular in mind when he moved there, though. After his grandma's death, he decided to pick up a camera as a way to connect with fashionable older people he encountered across New York. "But I only started taking pictures five years ago when I moved to New York City. I started with my roommate's Nikon Coolpix, and then I taught myself how to take better pictures and developed my skill. But photography was just a way for me to connect with older people. I wasn't planning on being a photographer, it just happened because of the project I was working on."

In the fashion business everyone uses these young, stick thin, airbrushed models. I mean just look up fashion photographers on Google and you'll find practically everyone uses models that make people think that to be beautiful or stylish you have to be eating only a light meal a day and regurgitating it up anyway, exercising till you faint and in your early twenties.

Ari Seth Cohen is challenging this stereotype with his blog Advanced Style. His idea of heaven is to wait in the freezing cold on a street corner in the middle of Manhattan hoping a fabulous-looking older woman passes by. When he spots one, he rushes up to her, explains his project, asks for a photo and just generally tries to convince her he's not a weirdo. He's rarely turned down. Ari Seth Cohen started his blog Advanced Style Friday, August 22, 208 and now it has more than 800,000 hits. Recently he has also collaborated with the New Zealand designer Karen Walker. From his actions we can learn that it is always good to challenge things that you do not believe in.

Ari is and will always be a man with an artistic flair and a willingness to fight for people's rights. His persistence, passion and empathy have led him to become an inspiring modest man. He has inspired me and millions of others to challenge the unwritten rules that we do not believe in.
