Albert Einstein

by Allison from Grand Rapids

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. He wasn’t aware of it, but he would achieve many goals and prove many past philosophers’ theories about the world to be false. When Albert was born, his father, Hermann, was a salesman, and his mother, Pauline, had no job and never did. His sister and only sibling, Mary (nicknamed Maja), was later born on November 18, 1881, when Albert was two and a half. Einstein learned how to speak at a later age then expected (around age four), and His parents were so worried, that they consulted a doctor. Not helping matters, one of his first teachers said that little Albert would never amount to much (and boy was she wrong).

Mr. Einstein’s life was filled with many important days, and even years. First, in 1879, he was born on March 14, 1881. Two years later in 1884 on November 18, his sister and only sibling, Maja, was born. Then, in 1884, his father gave him a compass at the age of five, which fascinated him for the rest of his life. 1889 was when he started teaching himself advanced math and science at college levels. To add to his early accomplishments, graduating high school and enrolling in ETH in Zurich (Switzerland) were now under his belt. Away at college in 1989, he met his soon-to-be-first-wife Mileva. Yet another accomplishment he had was graduating college in the year 1900. Then, in the year 1902, his first child, Lieserl, is born and is put up for adoption or dies (there is no record of Albert ever having further contact with her, if she was still living). Also in the same year, Albert got a job at the Swiss Patent Office and his father, Hermann, died. The following year of 1903 brought happiness and joy to Einstein’s life, when he married Mileva. Then, Hans Albert was born in 1904. In 1905 (also known as the miracle year), Albert Einstein’s true intelligence was released to the world when General Relativity and E=mc2 were introduced. Another happy moment was when Albert’s third child, Eduard, was born in 1910. Another happy year of Einstein’s life was in 1911, when he was appointed a professor at German University in Prague. Almost a decade later in 1919, he divorced Mileva in February, and later that June married his cousin, Elsa. More drama in that year was when his General Relativity Theory was proved during a solar eclipse that happened. Mr. Einstein’s biggest accomplishment yet was when he received the Nobel Prize in 1921 for study of physics. A dark year for Albert was in 1936 when his current wife, Elsa, died. Then, in 1940, Einstein claimed his U.S. citizenship and in 1955, at the age of 75, Albert Einstein died on April 18th in the early morning.

To name the biggest struggles overcome by Mr. Einstein were his affairs, his divorce, and his mother despising his first wife. While he was married to Mileva, he was secretly seeing his cousin Elsa (behind Mileva's back), for seven years before the official split. His divorce had a nasty affect on his children, Hans Albert and Eduard. Mr. Einstein only took Hans Albert on frequent hiking trips and never took Eduard unless he took Elsa and her two daughters along, too. When Albert was married to Mileva, his mother, Paula, had become obsessed with getting her out of the picture. In a letter written to Albert from his mother while Mileva and Albert were dating, she wrote, “Well, just don’t get her pregnant, Albert.” This was exactly what happened a few months later. A few of the most important accomplishments of Albert Einstein were receiving the 1921 Nobel Prize in physics, being offered to be the president of Israel, and having half of the patent of the automatic flash camera.

Albert Einstein is admirable to me because he helped start the research for the atomic bomb and he stayed true to his theories and supported them (even when he didn’t see that he was neglecting his wife and children). My hero demonstrated these two characteristics of a hero, which are intelligence and mental strength. His intelligence showed in his life when he invented E=mc2 and general relativity.

In conclusion, Mr. Einstein led a very interesting and meaningful life. Mostly, he lived in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States of America. Albert Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey on April 18, 1955 at 1:15 am at the age of 76. He died of clogged arteries that could’ve been prevented by surgery, which he declined. His body was cremated later that afternoon, and his ashes were spread by a river that was nearby. Before Mr. Einstein was cremated, his eyes and brain were removed from his body for scientific studies. His brain is currently being kept at Princeton Hospital/University by Mr. Elliott Krauss. Some up-to-date information about Albert Einstein is that he was named Person of the Century in 1999 by “TIME” magazine and the 99th element on the periodic table is named after him (which is called Einsteinium). This man was truly a genius, because someone back then could have probably have invented General Relativity if they thought hard enough about it. "The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." Einstein one said. In my opinion, no one as intelligent as him has since walked the earth (yet).
